There are over eighty species of helmet shells. Nearly all helmet shells have swollen body whorls and thick outer lips. The males are often distinguishable from the females through careful inspection of the varices, knobs or ribs on the shells. Helmet shells prey upon sea urchins and live in sandy areas.
